Confessions of a Star Wars fanboy

Every man was once a boy. And every boy once had dreams of being a superhero. For me, it wasn’t He-Man, or a Power Ranger, or Superman. I didn’t want to be a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, or Ultraman, or Gambit—though you gotta admit, Mr. Rico Suave could open one mean can o’ whoopass. Me? I wanted to be a Jedi.
Armed with a single lightsaber and the Force at my fingertips, I’d be unstoppable. My fellow Jedi and I would tour the galaxy together, coming to the aid of damsels in distress and beating off bad guys. I remember staying up nights just dreaming up new adventures. And finally one day, I made me a lightsaber using a dowel and blue saran wrap. How cool is that?
But when Episode I: The Phantom Menace came out, it only left an empty taste in my mouth. George Lucas had taken something that had captured the imaginations of millions…and delivered a 2-hour let-down that bore no semblance to the originals except in name. And Attack of the Clones, though good enough to watch twice, lacked the heart and sensitivity that had endeared us to the originals.
So why bother? Because when it comes down to it, what I like so much about Star Wars isn’t the movies—it is the universe it harkens to. For this is a story where a boy can awaken one day from a life dry of excitement, only to find that he has been called on an adventure to rescue the most beautiful girl he has ever seen; where the brightest star of the galaxy’s guardians can, like Lucifer, fall from grace into a darkness void of life and joy; where a smuggler can boast “Don’t tell me the odds,” and then go ahead and win the heart of the princess. THAT is the story I am all excited about, a story of the ordinary being summoned by destiny to achieve great things. Naive? Maybe, in this jaded age. But it’s a story I still believe possible.
And so, I can’t wait for Revenge of the Sith to come out. Not because the prequels have been anything worth watching. Nor because this last one is suddenly going to redeem the series. No, I hope it’ll be something worth sharing with my kids one day, but I’m not holding my breath. The reason I can’t wait: I have seen a glimpse of what it could have been…and for that, I would become a boy once again who stays up nights dreaming, if only for two hours and 10 minutes.

Hi, I saw your comment on Genova’s Xanga about the wildflowers in Death Valley. I was there, I have a picture posted in my Xanga. It’s #9. Come check it out.
Number 2 & 10 are also from Death Valley.
It’s actually the largest bloom is recorded history i think. And yes, they’re there, covering all of Death Valley. The old famous Salt lake is now an actual water lake.
Thanks for your input on my pics.
i just watched them this weekend!!! im excited now too
