  • thousand words: Mother’s orchids

My pictures have almost always included a human element. Not that the sky or animals or the miniature world or the city or landscapes or trees don’t make good subjects. Rather, I find people almost…infinitely more interesting. I’ve tried, but I haven’t been successful with anything other than people. Maybe you need to have a certain affinity with your subject if you are going to capture part of its soul. Or heh, maybe I’m just creatively (or technically?) deficient like that.

The thing is, to me plants are plants. But when I noticed a good handful of photographers on Xanga posting pretty stunning pictures, I decided to give it a shot (no pun intended). So ………. this is Junshien’s first attempt at flowers. Be kind. I’m just an amateur walking around pressing a button.

Kinda random, but this reminds me of Christie Jeon. Many years ago, when I was still planning on transferring to Berkeley, she took me on a pretty fun tour of the campus, showing me the interesting corners of Cal that they don’t give on the official tours. And every now and then, she would point out the different species of trees scattered throughout the university. I was encouraged by her enthusiasm and I honestly did try to spot what she was talking about…but all I could see were trees and more trees. (Tangent: I really wonder how she’s doing; haven’t seen her since we were freshmen.)

Green doesn’t do it for me yet. But I still want to see the world in new ways.

  • junshien…  wow…  you’re graduating.  i always thought you were a junior…  i really like your pictures.  aww…  congrates…

  • it didn’t take too long…oh about 10 mins. it’s easier than you think because you really don’t have to be that precise…
i like the composition on those flowers…it looks a bit too overexposed though..

  • Just FYI, “f/8 and be there” is an old National Geographic photographer saying, it means the best way to get good photographs is to keep your camera at f/8 (the sharpest for most lenses) and simply be at the right place at the right time. It’s sort of an inside thing, if you see someone else quoting that or something, you know they’re dedicated photographers…

  • Congrats on your internship and graduation!  Love the photos!  People also make excellent sketches too

  • Junshien, thanks for the link to the canoeing on Mono Lake. Good luck and have fun with your graduation!

  • congrats on graduation!!!  and major props to the two coolest ninjas!  hehe.

    btw, pretty orchids…

  • I suppose you just have to feel something towards the subject that you are shooting, be it love, hate, whatever. I was never much of a people person.

The flower photos are rather pleasant, but it’s a bit too overexposed.

    Take care

  • the orchids are beautiful!!! i love that really white and washed out look, makes it look dreeeeamy!! great job!!

  • gosh graduation. congrats on that. haven’t seen you around lately but maybe it’s because you have been so busy with being a under cover ninja and all. anyway, hope you have a great summer. and again i will say congrats. us youngies look up to people like you.

  • hey thank you very much for your comment ^_^…those pics of the orchids are so beautiful ><….oh and congrats!

  • the thing is.. it is a little less complicated to photograph things that aren’t aware of what you’re doing (plants, mountains, cities vs. striving models)
but personally, i’d rather see most anything more than flowers.  very few can pull off a powerful shot of a plant (kevin does it well)

lovely orchids, though.  my father has an obsession with orchids.. filling our greenhouse with them

  • the flowers are beautiful! the overexposure makes it seem so delicate :)

  • >>how come you always write so much? i’m not sure why i write so much. i think it may have something to do with the fact that, at times, my heart writes for me and i think my heart has a lot it wants to express sometimes, haha, or all the time. anyhow, i guess it’s trying to make up for all the times it tends to be quiet when it’s physically around others. ::sheepish grin:: but, yeah, something God’s been speaking to me about is training myself to be one who speaks words of truth and grace that are seasoned with salt only when the Spirit wants to speak, testify, prophesy, edify, etc. i need to also speak less (and write less), in general. i want to grow in listening. anyhow, as you can see by this long comment that first began on my xanga with the ”lie” of “that is all,” i’m in the process of learning. . . :) but, hey (is for horses), good job on your growing list of korean vocabulary. God must have blessed you with an awesome korean teacher! you must remember to thank her lots next time you see her. :)  and, hehe, you know that “jahl gah” means “go well” or “leave well,” right? the korean version of “good night,” which is “sleep well,” is “jahl jah.” btw, prepare me for missions field by teaching me your language! i want to learn a little bit about as many languages as i could right now from all my friends who speak different languages so that i could maybe learn whatever language i may need to learn later in life more quickly.

also, i like your images of the orchids. and about needing a certain affinity with your subject if you are going to capture part of its soul… hehe, real trees don’t have souls… though human tree-like worshippers of God who are firmly rooted in His Word, who worship Him throughout all seasons of life, and who point others to heaven do… anyhow, maybe that’s why i take bazillion pictures of trees…

and, haha, the image of you and jo is hilarious.

  • oh my gosh~
i love the first photo of the orchids!!!!
    my favorite flowers=]

  • hey, thnx for the props. the vignetting in the holga pics are because of the camera i’m using. the holga is a toy camera with a plastic lens and poor housing that leaks a ton of light. it’s just the nature of the toy camera. u should pick one up sometime. they’re cheap and low-tech! it’s a nice escape from the digital craze when u need it.
